Starting with space opera, he later experimented with the novel form. Stand on Zanzibar won 69s Hugo Award as best novel. The Jagged Orbit won the UKs 71 SF Award. His best-known work may be 75s proto-cyberpunk The Shockwave Rider. He coined worm to describe software reproducing itself across computer networks. He dealt with futures combining extrapolative exhilaration & future shock nightmares. Zanzibar with its overpopulation focus was his blockbuster, slightly overshadowing The Jagged Orbit (69), The Sheep Look Up (72)--an anti-pollution polemic ending with a burning USA--& The Shockwave Rider (75), prophetically mapping problems of information overload, viruses, hacking & the net. He was cursed by sanity, erudition & hatred of superstition & cant. His peace-activism & leftism may have caused disappointing US sales.--Dave Langford (edited). In an alternate reality where the Spanish Empire & Catholic Church run most of the world, this story follows a junior officer in the Society of Time, Don Miguel Navarro. If the past is tampered with, the present might be totally transformed. Its his job to watch out for meddling time-travellers.
